Letterpress CLASSES
learn to do it yourself!
You'll learn how to print from a photopolymer plate on my
Chandler & Price 10" x 15" press.
You can make your own:
Wedding invites
Business cards
Birth announcements
Greeting cards
Stationery
Art Prints
...or anything else that will fit on my press.
Let me know what you want to do and I can give you a quote on the materials and schedule a time to have the session.
Great discounts if you have a group of 3-4 people. If you don’t have a group of people together, you can be put on my waiting list if you want to take the class with more people. Email me here, if you’d like to request to be put on a waiting list and let me know if you have a strong preference for a Saturday or Sunday workshop.
I charge $200 for one 4 hour class and that cost is split among the participants (up to 4 people). Obviously, the fewer people there are, the more time you’ll get to spend on your own project. If you’re doing a project that is multiple colors or has more than one plate you’d like to print from, I recommend doing the class with no more than one other person to make sure you can finish it.
If you have access and experience with Adobe Illustrator or InDesign, you can create your own design to print from. Your other options are to meet with me and I can help you create your design on my computer, or print from plates I already have made. We can schedule a day a week or two before your workshop, where I can help you with your own design. Let me know if you’re interested in that and I will tell you my rates and give you a rough estimate of how much time I think we’d need to spend. If you want to make your own plate to print from, I just need the design (in PDF form) and a deposit by the Wednesday before your class.

TIPS FOR DESIGNING YOUR OWN PIECE TO PRINT IN A LETTERPRESS CLASS
Here are some guidelines to help make your design letterpress-friendly:
-It’s best to design your files in Adobe Illustrator or InDesign, outline your fonts (see directions below), and send to me as a PDF. If you need help with your design or don’t have Illustrator, we can set up a separate date before your workshop, where I can help you.
-To outline your fonts in Illustrator on InDesign. Select all of your text with the Selection Tool (black arrow), go to the “Type” drop-down menu and select “Create Outlines”.
-Your graphic should be made of lines or dots that will print solidly, not something that resembles pencil shading.
-You don’t want to have an area that requires a large amount of solid ink and an area with fine lines on the same item you are printing, unless they are going to be different colors and therefore require a separate run, anyway, where you can adjust the amount of pressure and ink.
-Just be aware that if there is a full-bleed or if the printing is to come closer than 1/4” to the edge of the paper, you will need to trim your job again after the printing.
-Your piece will take longer to set up if there is a tight registration of colors (meaning that your two or three colors are to be printed with little or no space between them). It’s fine to design something this way, but just be aware that the set up will use more of your class time.
-A minimum line weight of .25 pt for all line art to prevent broken lines in printing. Font should be no smaller than 3pt for sans serif fonts and 4pt for serif fonts.
-The largest size image my press can accommodate is 8” x 13”. The paper can be a little bigger than that.
-Any questions about what any of this means, feel free to email me! :)
